You must have heard about Giclee prints! This is because it is a flourishing printing technology used by artists and photographers throughout the world. Giclee is a French term meaning “to spray”, was coined by Jack Duganne a print-maker working with Nash Editions. Giclee prints are made with special light fast inks which if kept out of light can last for 25 years. The prints are made both on canvas and paper. However, those on canvas turns out to be much more durable.
Previously, offset printers were used to reproduce the original artworks on canvas. It was since 1990s that canvas print associated with inkjet printing process known as ‘Giclee’ came into being. The printers spray a variety of colours at a time through micro-nozzles on the canvas. Such print captures and reproduces colour as well as resolution in such a way that it becomes difficult to identify the original one when both kept together.
With Giclee canvas prints artists can now reproduce hundreds of copies of their artwork within an hour which are not only accurate but are also printed on the similar kind of canvas that the original was painted on. Such speed and accuracy were not heard of in the world of art before.
Giclee canvas prints is also an affordable alternative to buying expensive original pieces of artworks as it is not always possible for people to buy the expensive pieces of original artworks.. The quality of such print is equivalent to traditional gelatine prints and is found mostly in museums, art galleries and is also widely used for home décor.
